You’ve heard it a zillion times – DO NOT BE LATE. To job interviewers, LATE means UNreliable, UNprofessional, UNorganized and other unflattering UNs.
Job interviewers are aware that you may have applied for other positions in other companies but do not commit the mistake of calling your job interviewer by a different name! It conveys lack of sincerity in the job position for which you are applying.
This is the bane of many job interviewers – interviewing people who are obviously NOT qualified for the position. As an example, one job interviewer stated his frustration when the “five years of unparalleled field marketing experience” indicated on the resume for a marketing sales job was in reality… five years – ON AND OFF - as an assistant sales clerk at the local car shop.
Job interviewers know you polish your resume to a gleaming shine but there is a line between stretching the truth and lying. In this scenario, you are wasting the job interviewer’s time and earning his/her ire instead.
Sure, real beauty is within but when it comes to job interviews, they way you look outside (i.e., the way you’re dressed) is a direct reflection what you are inside. So dress appropriately. Remember, “to be successful, one must project an image of success”.
Job interviewers – unless they are casting directors – don’t like you flirting with them. REALLY. Flirting with your job interviewer is a recipe for disaster. It means that you don’t have the skills for the job and so you are resorting to other ‘tactics’.
I know, you want to impress but do consider that almost all job interviews are conducted in compact spaces so emptying your aftershave or running to the company ladies’ room for one last sprits of your heavy perfume will not impress your interviewer at all. In fact, the only thing it will achieve is to knock the wind out of him / her!
This may sound funny, but it’s not. The heavy scent will distract the interviewer and so he/she will want to wrap up the interview as fast as possible, making you lose out on the chance to convince him/her you’re the right person for the job.
When you come into an interview, three things will immediately strike the interviewer: your overall appearance, the firmness –or lameness– of your handshake, and your smile.
If you have something on your teeth, that’s distracting and funny but not so bad. On the other hand, if you are shy of your discolored or stained teeth then that’s worse because then you are showing an inhibited smile. Let’s face it; an inhibited smile doesn’t really convey a ‘go-getter’ attitude doesn’t it?
So how does a great smile affect your chances of nailing that job interview? Well, according to research conducted by Beall Research & Training of Chicago (as requested by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry), a great smile can “make you appear more successful and intelligent”.
Of all the job interview tips above, only the last one takes a bit more effort as you would need to invest in a tooth whitening product. But then again, wouldn’t you want to have a winning smile, radiate success and intelligence and get the job of your dreams?
